Celebrating Arabic Culture Through Music

Each year, Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the Islamic month of Ramadan. This year, Eid also marked the beginning of an exciting new partnership between S'Cool Sounds and the Khalil Gibran International Academy in Brooklyn.

The residency, which started at the beginning of April, aims to introduce 11th and 12th grade students to Arabic and Middle Eastern music. Focusing on songs, rhythms, and basic Arabic language, the program will culminate in a performance showcase. Teaching Artist (TA) Marwan Allam is leading the effort, with support from TA Nezih Antakli.

As Marwan explained, "This program will allow students to take pride in their cultural heritage and foster confidence and a deeper connection between music and language. The showcase will also give students a chance to share and celebrate their culture with the school community."

Throughout the residency, Marwan and Nezih will teach a variety of songs that are accessible to students at different levels, from classic Arabic pop music to traditional folk songs from different Arab countries. Lessons will incorporate scales (maqam'), rhythmic patterns (iqa'at), and percussion technique on the frame drum and the darbuka.

The program is supported by an Arts Partnership Grant from the NYC Department of Education. Specifically, the funding comes from the Arts for Multilingual Learners and Students with Disabilities program, which aims to "advance equitable access to inclusive arts education by funding arts partnerships between eligible schools and experienced, local arts organizations." The Khalil Gibran Academy secured the grant and reached out S'Cool Sounds to initiate the partnership.

Coinciding with Arab-American Heritage Month, the residency will doubtless add a great deal to the students' education. As Marwan recently remarked, "the program will promote inclusivity and cross-cultural understanding, helping students gain respect and appreciation for different cultures and languages." What better way to learn about these subjects than through the joy of music in community!
