Breaking Ground Partnership Expands
Last summer, S'Cool Sounds renewed a longtime partnership with Breaking Ground, an exceptional organization whose mission is to strengthen individuals, families and communities by developing and sustaining supportive and affordable housing as well as programs for formerly unhoused and other vulnerable New Yorkers. This collaboration first began in 2018 after an introduction facilitated by SCS Board President Emeritus Richard Pace and his wife Lois. This year, we are thrilled to further expand the program at new locations in Times Square and the Bronx.
In addition to teaching at the Hegeman building in East New York for the second consecutive year, SCS Teaching Artist Kenneth Jiménez is leading the new cohort of eight adult students in Times Square. The weekly lessons include ukulele technique, percussion, chord progressions, and ensemble skills.
Some students are beginners, while others have years of professional experience. These students serve as mentors to their classmates, often bringing original work to share. One such participant noted: "they’re running a very good program here, and so far for me it’s been like I’m waking after being away from music for many years, and I really appreciate it very much."
With bass and guitar in hand, Kenneth has been playing along with the ukulele ensemble to create a magical groove with the beginners and the experienced alike. The students have been having so much fun that they've been requesting more class time, even meeting on their own once a week to rehearse. Kenneth remarked, "The consistency and discipline taught through music is something I think they really value, especially when they start seeing the joy of improving and being able to play different things every week."
As Breaking Ground staff member Sheidel Milfort observed, “Music is one of a few things that is universally loved by all. My day is brighter seeing the tenants participate and enjoy themselves with this program!”
