Bright Futures Through Music
With schools throughout Kenya on an extended break, options for positive and healthy activities are limited for students in Kibera. Happily, this is not so for the 48 high school students enrolled in S'Cool Sounds' Futures Music Program, who have been busy building their musical skills this vacation!
With classes in keyboard, guitar, saxophone, drum kit, assorted African instruments, choral music, and music literacy, the program runs three days per week with focused lessons in the morning and guided practice in the afternoon. This routine supports the four major goals of the program:
Ensure continuation of music learning among students in high school and out of high school.
Normalize the spirit of cooperation and leadership among the students.
Foster social intelligence among students with an emphasis on positive character development.
Develop a thriving musical community.
S’Cool Sounds Kenyan Music Director Jacob Saya reports that enrollment has been growing steadily each of the four times the program has been offered, with girls strongly represented. Since its inception in 2022, many of the students have now tried multiple instruments, with 13 songs in their repertoire. A healthy sense of competition has motivated students to strive for continued excellence in their studies and has also fostered positive leadership development.
When asked what participation in the program has meant to him as a student, Boris said with a smile:
"Through the Futures Music Program, I have learned how to play saxophone and guitar. When I go back to school, I will practice and perfect my skills. Thank you Futures Music Program!"
As we announced in September, SCS received a $50,000 challenge grant toward our annual giving campaign!
With 11 days left in December, we have $15,000 to go. With your help, we can reach our goal!
