NEWSFLASH: Nairobi Performance Confirmed!
This July's program-building trip to Kenya just got even more exciting! We are thrilled to announce that a group of SCS students from Kibera will give four different performances on July 10 at Village Market in Nairobi, an upscale shopping center near the UN and the US Embassy. With integrated natural features such as gardens, rivers, and waterfalls, Village Market's design was inspired by the open-air markets that are ubiquitous across much of Africa. Much more than a mall, Village Market also serves as a community center and performance space, making it an ideal locale for music.
For students from Kibera—the largest informal settlement in the world—the journey to Village Market will allow them to visit a part of Nairobi outside their normal experience. Likewise, visitors to the market will have the rare chance to hear the amazing music made be these extraordinary students.
With great enthusiasm, SCS Kenya Music Director Jacob Saya recently noted the social justice implications of this field trip: "Our chance to perform music at the Village Market disrupts the idea that [the students'] humble environments are limiting. The children anticipate the gift of great joys fused with exploration during this debut performance at the mall."
Likewise, SCS Founder and Artistic Director Nina Stern, SCS Teaching Artist Ruaridh Pattison, and SCS Board Member Nancy Jo Snider are all excited to support the students as they prepare for these public performances.
This promises to be a July to remember!
Thanks to the continued generosity of our supporters, we have claimed the $1,000 challenge grant offered by Nancy Jo Snider! This means we are less than $1,000 away from our $5,000 goal.
Your donation will support the field trip to Village Market, teacher professional development, student competitions, new instruments, uniforms, and more.
Help us get to the finish line with a contribution today!
