Expanding Our Digital Reach

Over the past few years, S'Cool Sounds (SCS) has created a treasure-trove of learning resources, from instructional videos for students to lesson plans for teachers. While already featured on our website and our Pinterest board, we have recently expanded our reach even further through an exciting new channel: free online professional development workshops for teachers.

Over the past two months, SCS has offered two sessions: Teaching Recorder Through Multicultural Music and Enhancing Classroom Instruction Through Multicultural Music. These one-hour workshops were co-led by SCS Teaching Artists Ruaridh "Ru" Pattison and Kenneth Jiménez, respectively, in collaboration with digital learning and arts integration specialist JoDee Scissors.

In addition to engaging participants in SCS learning resources, the sessions also aimed to equip educators with multicultural teaching strategies to support effective lesson implementation. Between the two workshops, over 200 educators from 40 U.S. states and half a dozen countries registered to attend, and the video recordings have been replayed 50 times and counting.

Reflecting on the workshops, JoDee remarked, "Collaborating with a Teaching Artist (TA) is an opportunity to marry our strengths. TAs bring music education field experience, music theory, practice, and skills to the table. They are incredibly entertaining and bring musical engagement to each and every workshop. I, on the other hand, bring the research, pedagogy, general education, and digital learning skills to the table. It's a harmonious collaboration because we're rooted in an appreciation for the arts and making an educational impact."
